Falsifying Applications

When applying for a job we all want to make ourselves as desirable as possible to potential employers and it can become pretty tempting to add a little extra to make ourselves look all that much more qualified or unique. But whether you're looking for a position in a catering Toronto operation or as a receptionist here in Greensboro it is usually a big mistake to lie on your job application. Not only does it make you seem untrustworthy if you are discovered but it can also be the reason that you lose a job if you are in fact the one that is selected from all of the others.

The most common lies that people make on their resume or job application is the manipulation of dates, employment history, education, or the reason for leaving a past position. Some people also feel the need to falsify their job title or responsibilities or their compensation for a former career. If they were working in a factory selling cable sheaves they might claim that they were an assistant manager. That is certainly something that could come back to haunt them in the future.

When people lie about the dates of their past jobs they are usually doing so to show no gaps in their employment history. This becomes very confusing for a potential employer who is attempting to contact people for references. If they believe that you worked in a heat shrink tubing manufacturing plant in 2008 but you really worked there for 2006 than they will likely either discover your lie or be unable to find the right person who you worked for at the time.

Falsifying education can also cause huge problems when it comes to all sorts of jobs. For instance, if you are applying for a position in a chemical lab where you will need to use sensitive products and instruments like lead-lined doors that will usually mean that you need to have some workplace safety training under your belt. Lying about having taken these classes could definitely result in you losing your job and could even put you and other workers in danger.

There are obvious reasons why someone would want to lie about their reason for leaving a past job if the split was not an amicable one. That will usually mean that you will not be getting a good reference from that past employer and could hinder your search for a new job. But it's better to be truthful about why you stopped working for that online flyer printing company and show that you are not going to repeat your mistakes than to make a second mistake by lying. Telling the truth will likely be appreciated by your potential new employer.
